Bringing Parents Into the Mathematics Learning Community
Presenter: Kelli Wasserman
RSBCMTA October Dinner Meeting
Tuesday, October 13, 2015
5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Presentation Description:
You might be asking, why should I be concerned with parents' understanding of mathematics? There are a few reasons! First, parents will always be children's first teachers; they are trusted resources. If they will be helping at home, they need to be informed about what is taking place in the classroom. Second, there are varying opinions surrounding the move to the California Math Standards. It is important that parents are informed by reliable, research-based evidence and explanations, rather than have frustrated parents, politicians or reporters. The transition to the California Math Standards is overwhelming, so we need parents as partners, at all levels.
During this session, Kelli Wasserman will discuss how she started "Parent Math Night" at a local school. She will discuss her goals for parent math nights, including how to address negative press, selecting math concepts to discuss, and how to help parents understand the importance of sense-making in mathematics. Through activity and discussion, participants will experience math concepts at a variety of grade levels, gain a better understanding of parent concerns, and learn about resources available to support parents and teachers.
