Getting All Students Engaged in Mathematical Discourse
Presenters: Karon Woolsey and Mariko Arteaga, Mathematics Instructional Coaches, Redlands Unified School District
RSBCMTA January Dinner Meeting
Monday, January 30, 2017
4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Presentation Description:
A key challenge for teachers is how to get students to work collaboratively and discuss math productively. Using effective structures and planning strategies. Based on the book, 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions, we will work through a 3-Act mathematical task to model how to get responses to instructional tasks in ways that advance the engagement and mathematical learning of the whole class. The task will focus on grade 6 ratios and proportional reasoning with ideas for extending to both earlier grades and high school.
